Historic Lower Thames Street

During colonial times, Newport Rhode Island's Lower Thames Street was a dynamic working waterfront, bustling with shipyards, merchant ships, distilleries, and mills.

Today, Lower Thames Street hosts Newport's largest concentration of unique, eclectic, individually-owned shops, galleries and artists studios. A mix of fine intimate dining, casual bistros and family-style restaurants and bars are located along our one-mile harbor side.

Thirty-Two restaurants and bars, over seventy-five owner occupied shops, distinctive lodging, five fantastic galleries, fifteen historic buildings and eight public wharfs are found in the heart of Newport's Historic Waterfront.

Lower Thames Street is also home to five marinas, historic properties, museums, charming Bed and Breakfasts and several hotels.

Lower Thames Street allows for public access to Newport Harbor at eight different locations along our shoreline DINE* SHOP* STROLL Lower Thames Street.
